Superb antique brooch adorned with an yellow gold 18K shell cameo, representing Minerva helmeted in the antique style. The abundant feathers adorning her helmet are actually a hissing dragon.
The execution of this cameo is superb, very finely sculpted and the variety of details is striking. The back of the jewel is even covered with a large mother-of-pearl plate. The clasp is an old-fashioned pigtail, with no safety catch as was common in the 19th century, but still very tight.
Its large size means it can be used in many different ways. The cameo is making a comeback on contemporary outfits, much to our delight.
